The Acoustic Vibe of the Secretary’s Garden

A bit further from the crowds of the Clamshell Tent, past the vibrant concerts and parties of the Baluarte Plano Luneta de Sta. Isabel, lies a secret garden, The Secretary’s Garden to be exact. With either a soloist, dueo or trio holding court with acoustic guitars and other string instruments, spectators are treated to folk, jazz and classical music in a laid black, open air venue. To find the place, one should only follow the mellow voice and clear guitar strums drifting along General Luna Street.

Manila Bulletin’s Lifestyle columnist: Deedee M. Siytangco

On the local tourism scene – have you made “pasyal” to historic Intramuros lately? Well, if you haven’t yet, please do, and bring the whole family! Most of the Walled City has been lighted up by Tourism boss Dick Gordon and some civic-minded  friends. We wish all of the Walled City can be included in the lighting project, but what has been accomplished so far has been delightful! Congratulation, Secretary Dick! The areas included in the WOW Philippines year-round program are walkable, clean and well-lighted.

Proposed international airport in Caticlan to boost tourism in Boracay

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo tasked Philippine Tourism Authority general manager Robert Dean S. Barbers to spearhead the development of Boracay Island into an international premier tourist destination during consultations with the Boracay Community at Casa Pilar, Boracay Island last month. Barely four months in office, President Arroyo entrusted Barbers with the expansion of Caticlan Airport into an international airport to make the island more accessible to foreign travelers and the influx of foreign investment. Hassle-free direct flights from abroad to Aklan and other tourist destinations in Boracay would pave the way for President Arroyo’s vision of creating a nautical highway to the world class and fine beaches on Boracay Island.

SARS of concern SARS of Concern (Editorial)

Untill the other day, Tourism and Health officials were boldly insisting we were SARS-free. Now, the threat of SARS epidemic engulfing the entire nation can not be brushed aside. Because not much is known of the killer disease, no one can say for sure whether or not it can be contained soon. We can only hope and pray the situation does not worsen to something similar to the 1918 flu epidemic that broke out in Spain and killed 20 million people worldwide.
